Theatre etiquette and dress code
There is no set dress code for going to the theatre/concerts here in Melbourne. You don’t need to wear a suit and tie but people might give you odd looks if you show up in activewear. Go for a nice smart casual.
When in a theatre, always turn off your phone and put it away, do not talk to anyone next to you during the performance.
Go to the bathroom before going in as there are often lockouts and they may not let you back in for some time.
You can normally take food and drinks into the theatre but may be asked to replace your glass container for a plastic one. Some theatres allow hot drinks with lids, some do not. Just follow the direction from theatre staff as to what they allow into the theatre.
Always buy your tickets from a reputable seller.
Directly from the venue’s website. From there it might direct you to their authorised seller.
Ticketmaster or Ticketek are the two main ticket sellers for events in Melbourne.
Buy directly at the box office, either at the venue or over the phone.
Avoid unauthorised re-sellers that include Viagogo, Ticket Merchant, Tixel, Ticketmaster Resale, Ticketek Marketplace, Ticketbis, eBay, Gumtree, Tickets Australia, Queen of Tickets, Supatix or similar.
Keep an eye out for festivals
Melbourne is filled to the brim with cultural festivals. Music, live performance, art, film, everything.

Some of the East End Theatre District theatres will offer discounted rush tickets at the box office from an hour before the show. It’s sporadic so if there is a show you’re keen on seeing, head to the box office of the show you want to see and ask if they have any last minute deals or rush tickets available. These are rare and most rush tickets are done day of show online through TodayTix.
Melbourne Theatre Company offer 50% off tickets for anyone under 30. Whether buying online or in person, you always have to collect your tickets at the box office before the performance and show ID for all people buying that type of ticket.
